Sirius University of Science and Technology, with the support of PhosAgro, is creating one of the largest laboratory complexes in Russia, equipped with the most modern equipment to conduct research in the field of agricultural technologies.
The first stage of the complex was opened in September 2022. The creation of an advanced scientific infrastructure is underway: by the end of 2024, the second stage of the laboratory complex will be launched.
With the commission of the laboratory complex, Sirius and PhosAgro intend to create a system for training personnel for the sector of agricultural technologies, combining research and educational activities. The leading researchers may receive grants on some promising topics.
PhosAgro will cover part of the costs of studying some biologists and creating a program for a bachelor’s degree. Interaction with talented schoolchildren within the “Great Challenges” framework and other educational projects will allow recognition of motivated students at an early stage.
Currently, the agro-industrial complex of Russia is looking for methods to combat pathogens with minimal use of chemical plant protection products. One of the projects that Sirius scientists are working on is aimed at obtaining the first domestic grape varieties resistant to powdery mildew. Thanks to them, the consumption of chemical pesticides that are used to protect grapes will be reduced, which means that the environmental impact and the cost of producing plant protection products will be minimized. The conducted research will help to get higher yields with a high content of nutrients and restore the properties of grapes lost during domestication.
Another project that scientists are working on in partnership with PhosAgro is the selection of new varieties of legumes. Research is aimed at increasing their productivity. The creation of cheap and high-quality vegetable protein can dramatically change the situation with food availability in the poorest countries.
